A grilled cheese craving is a grilled cheese craving, no matter where you live or how limited your supplies are. We’ve all heard about the story of a college kid who took a clothes iron to Wonder Bread and Kraft singles in a moment of desperation, when the dining halls were closed. Even if you’re not living in close quarters with no kitchen access, this recipe is delicious and plain fun. For the frugal gourmet, experiment with different types of bread, cheese and fillings. Pair it with some tomato soup (from a can, of course!) and you’ll have a well-rounded college meal. Try it, and it might be your new favorite way to use an iron!

Ingredients

  • 2 slices bread
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1-2 slices cheese
  • iron

Directions

  1. Heat iron to medium high or Wool setting. Make sure Steam setting if off.
  2. Butter bread evenly to the edges on both the inside & outside layers.
  3. Place a cheese single (or two) in between slices of bread & place on cutting board
  4. Cover bread with aluminum foil or brown paper lunch bag.
  5. Hold iron in place. Move around slightly to get to the edges as if you were ironing.
  6. Flip over & repeat above sequence until cheese is melted & bread is golden brown in color.
