Through the lens of an author of color, they share the diverse voices of Black culture from their perspective. As readers, this gives us the opportunity to learn from their life experiences and appreciate their story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But some stories have been harder to tell, through no fault of the author. Writers of color &#8212; especially women &#8212; are often overlooked by the large publishing houses in their efforts to share their story. Non-Hispanic white people account for 60 percent of the U.S. population; in 2018, they wrote 89 percent of the books in our sample.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To celebrate literacy and give a voice to the Black authors who have been underrepresented for far too long, one community of readers has come together to ensure these stories are told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Amplifying the Voices of Black Culture<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/bgrbt-logo-300x300.png\" alt=\"Black Girls Read Books, Too logo\" class=\"wp-image-12455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/bgrbt-logo-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/bgrbt-logo-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/bgrbt-logo-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/bgrbt-logo-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/bgrbt-logo-270x270.png 270w, https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/bgrbt-logo.png 1147w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Meet Christina Imohokpomoh, the Founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bgrbt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Black Girls Read Books, Too<\/a> (aka BGRBT), an online community she brought to life after she saw there was \u201ca lack of black reading interest groups for womxN.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through this social media trailblazer\u2019s extraordinary efforts, she is correcting the dated misperception within the publishing world that \u2018black people don\u2019t read.\u2019 Since its inception in 2016, her <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/BGRBT\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook community<\/a> has grown to over 35,000 followers and boasts nearly 17,000 on a public Facebook page. Both are focused on empowering one another and ensuring equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe members of the group are very active,\u201d Christina explains. \u201cWe have hundreds of posts per day recommending books, movies, poetry, discussions on intersectional feminism, <a href=\"\/blog\/2020\/06\/19\/elfster-juneteenth-gift-exchange\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"the black experience (opens in a new tab)\">the black experience<\/a>, pop and daily news.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking Through The Lens of Intersectional Feminism<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image8-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Gift to celebrate black culture\n\" class=\"wp-image-12461\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image8-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image8-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image8-203x270.jpeg 203w, https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image8.jpeg 1242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption>Celebrating literacy &amp; Black culture<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To better understand the mission of the group, I thought it would be worth taking a closer look at \u2018intersectional feminism&#8217; and how that may affect its members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As feminism advocates for women\u2019s rights and equality between the sexes, intersectional feminism also takes into account how a woman\u2019s overlapping identities, such as race, class, ethnicity and sexual orientation, may additionally affect how they experience oppression and discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/gender.ucla.edu\/person\/juliet-a-williams\/#:~:text=Biography-,Juliet%20A.,UCLA%20Social%20Science%20Interdepartmental%20Program.&amp;text=Her%20most%20recent%20book%20is,of%20California%20Press%2C%202016).\" target=\"_blank\">Juliet Williams<\/a>, professor of gender studies at UCLA,<strong> <\/strong><em>&#8220;Intersectional feminism is a form of feminism that stands for the rights and empowerment of all women, taking seriously the fact of differences among women, including different identities based on radicalization, sexuality, economic status, nationality, religion, and language. Intersectional feminism attends to the ways in which claims made in the name of women as a class can function to silence or marginalize some women by universalizing the claims of relatively privileged women.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this motivated community will not be silenced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs an African-American focused book group, we were deeply affected by the Civil Unrest and the pandemic in 2020 ,\u201d says Christina. \u201cMany members used the group as a place of respite and discussion for growth\/change. We\u2019ve had more discussions on race, being active in the black community, and using the group as a resource of information. Since the nationwide lockdown we\u2019ve had more In depth discussions on&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/strategist\/article\/best-books-about-black-feminism.html\" target=\"_blank\">Black Feminism<\/a>, Spirituality, and the struggles Black Authors face to generate dialogue and hopefully change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several times a month, the BGRBT admin team hosts Facebook Live events to give the community the chance to meet with various authors. They\u2019ve hosted talks with well-known authors like <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Tiffany D. Jackson (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.writeinbk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tiffany D. Jackson<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Farah Rochon (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farrahrochon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Farah Rochon<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Nancy Johnson (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/nancyjohnson.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nancy Johnson<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Elizabeth Acevedo (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.acevedowrites.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elizabeth Acevedo<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Colleen Hoover (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.colleenhoover.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Colleen Hoover<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Sharon Flake (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sharongflake.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sharon Flake<\/a> who work with large publishing houses, but they also spotlight indie authors&nbsp;like <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"C.C. Solomon (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ccsolomon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">C.C. Solomon<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Tanzania Glover (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tanzaniaglover.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tanzania Glover<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany authors and their publicists contact our group to seek out opportunities with BGRBT on social media,\u201d she explains. \u201cMembers have said to us the FB Lives with authors are motivating: it lets them know that they can write their own novels, learn about the book writing process, and meet a lifelong goal of being a published author.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Gift Exchange to Celebrate Literacy &amp; Black Culture<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image4.jpeg\" alt=\"Grown novel by Tiffany D. Jackson\" class=\"wp-image-12460\" width=\"257\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image4.jpeg 514w, https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image4-161x300.jpeg 161w, https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image4-145x270.jpeg 145w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><figcaption>BGRBT Goal Getter gifting!<br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As another way to connect and bring some fun into the mix, Christina has hosted several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/secret-santa-generator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Elfster Gift Exchanges (opens in a new tab)\">Elfster Gift Exchanges<\/a> for her community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Members expressed interest in doing a book exchange for some time and I love to do exchanges in general with friends, so I sprang into action,&#8221; she says.&nbsp;&#8220;People really enjoy the exchanges and one time we had over 300 people participate in an exchange.&#8221; So far, Christina has hosted 6 exchanges at different times of the year with more fun in the works!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;People have become friends after the exchange, they continue to keep up the exchanges amongst themselves &#8212; even becoming pen pals. They call each other \u201cBook Besties,&#8221; \u201cBook Baes,&#8221; \u201cBook friends\u201d lol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are the expectations for those who participate?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Members that participate must provide proof of sending packages via screenshot of orders, USPS\/Fedex receipts, and picture of the mailing packages,&#8221; Christina explains. &#8220;Members typically have a minimum budget of $20-25 and the packages must include books. Participants are welcome to go above and beyond the spending limit. Exchanges also must include a wishlist or Amazon list, to ensure their gifter gets things they like.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what are a few of her favorite things? &#8220;I enjoyed receiving the <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Concrete Rose (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/006284671X?tag=ei-search-d-20&amp;linkCode=osi&amp;th=1&amp;psc=1\" target=\"_blank\">Concrete Rose<\/a><\/em> by Angie Thomas and nursing school supplies,&#8221; Christina reflects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With another Book Exchange in the works for this summer, we can\u2019t wait to see what\u2019s in store for this inspirational group!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Black Authors Matter<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to connect to get to know Black authors who are making a difference?
