It\u2019s a burst of brightness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, hosting a dinner party can be a high-wire act. You need the right combination of great food, lively guests who get along, and stuff to do. Once the plates are cleared and people are sighing with satiation, it\u2019s common to play games. If your crowd expects it, you better be ready.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, there are some great dinner party Christmas games that\u2019ll put the jolly in your holly. These games are fun, community-oriented, filled with laughter, and present a chance for your guests to get to know each other better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dinner Party Christmas Games for Groups of Any Size<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a lot of different types of games to play at dinner parties depending on what kind of group you have. Here are some of our favorites.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Icebreaker Games<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Icebreaker games are great if you have a mixed crowd, like coworkers and friends, or neighbors and family. We\u2019re firmly in favor of having \u201cworlds collide,\u201d as this will make for more interesting conversations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But these <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/five-truly-unique-adult-ice-breaker-games-and-discussion-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\">icebreaker games<\/a> are also fun for people who have known each other for years. You can always learn something new about somebody.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Lightning Questions<\/em>.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/a-lightning-question-office-party-icebreaker-game-that-will-have-your-coworkers-shooting-from-the-hip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Lightning questions are perfect for office parties<\/a>, but you can do them at home, too. Come up with several rounds of questions from easy (\u201cFavorite city?\u201d) to harder (\u201cDo you believe in love at first sight?\u201d) to the absurd\/philosophical (\u201cIf dogs could talk, would they be interesting?\u201d). Make enough questions in every round for every guest. Each person will be asked a full set of questions and must answer rapidly. See how people\u2019s minds work on the spot, learn about them, and prepare to laugh like crazy.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Life Auction. <\/em><\/strong>Here, people are given a hypothetical $1000 and can bid against other players on important attributes they want to possess. Would you put $500 on the power of persuasion? Or $250 on the ability to survive in the woods? Or would you put most of your dough on being super smart? Have fun with this! Maybe you can be rich but then you have to live somewhere terrible. You can be attractive but only to people with annoying laughs. Be as deep or as silly as you want.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Autobiography Words<\/em>.<\/strong> Simply come up with some words, ideas, or places (for example, \u201cbasketball,\u201d \u201cSpain,\u201d or \u201cnostalgia\u201d) and have a guest talk for a minute about what that thing means to them. It might be a memory, a dream, an idea, a fantasy\u2014anything. You\u2019ll learn things about everyone, even people you thought you knew like the back of your hand.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Board Games<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;A confession: I stopped playing board games for <em>years<\/em>. I didn\u2019t understand why people wanted to bring them out at parties. Weren\u2019t those for kids? I even frequently teased my friend Laramy about playing them every weekend.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was wrong. When my wife and I started playing more games, I remembered how fun they were, and now I love playing them with friends. Turns out Laramy was right! Who knew?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/shop\/search\/?q=games\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">favorite board games<\/a> for dinner parties:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Game of Thrones Clue<\/em>.<\/strong> I love Clue. I loved it as a kid, I love it now, I love the movie. Watching it goes well with any <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"\/blog\/2017\/09\/19\/3-spooktacular-halloween-party-games-adults\/\" target=\"_blank\">Halloween party games<\/a>. But the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/shop\/search\/?q=game%20of%20thrones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"> <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/shop\/search\/?q=game%20of%20thrones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Game of Thrones<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/shop\/search\/?q=game%20of%20thrones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"> <\/a>version adds a special twist, especially in winter. It\u2019s cold. There are ice kings and direwolves\u2026 and you never know who the bad guy is. (Except that it\u2019s Joffrey. It\u2019s gotta always be Joffrey, right?)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Codenames<\/em>.<\/strong> In Codenames, you have to work with your team to \u201cfind the spies\u201d using complicated word clues. It\u2019s more than just having a good vocabulary; you have to know how your partner thinks and the connections they might make between words. It\u2019s fun to play this in conjunction with icebreakers. After you get to know somebody, how well will you know their mind?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Salad Bowl<\/em>.<\/strong> Okay, this doesn\u2019t have a board, per se. But you put names in a bowl and teams have to work together to guess them by getting clues from one team member (kind of like Charades). The clues could be famous people, historical figures, or just people you know. It\u2019s fun to see how your friends describe people, and you can keep making it harder as rounds go by (i.e. no proper names, only five words, etc).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gift-Giving Games<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, it <em>is<\/em> Christmas. It\u2019s time to exchange gifts. Here are some ways to make it a game:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Yankee Swap<\/em>.<\/strong> Some people call it <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/how-to-play-a-white-elephant-gift-exchange-game\/\" target=\"_blank\">White Elephant<\/a>. Some people call it Dirty Santa. Whatever you call it, this game is filled with intrigue, back-stabbing, plotting, furious counting, and, of course, a ton of laughs. There are a lot of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"\/blog\/2017\/12\/28\/the-best-yankee-gift-exchange-game-ideas-for-how-to-play\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yankee Swap ideas<\/a>, but they\u2019re all fun.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Secret Santa<\/em>.<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elfster.com\/secret-santa-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Secret Santa rules<\/a> are pretty basic: you randomly get matched to a partner and buy them a gift. As such, you need anonymity. You need good gifts. You need people who are willing to act innocent when their giftee stares them down, searching for any hints. This is a holiday classic that will never let you down.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some Secret Santa Notes and Tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you decide to include Secret Santa as part of your dinner party festivities, there are a few other considerations to keep in mind:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>You can still play other games!<\/em><\/strong> I love Yankee Swap, but it can take a really long time. A Secret Santa swap is a pretty defined chunk of time, as everyone only gets one turn. So, you could also do ice breakers and board games on the same night.
